When it comes to creating a list of the best muscle cars of all time, it would be easy to be sidetracked into an argument on personal opinion. So to save everyone the heartache, I’m going to share Car News Central’s top 10 muscle cars of the 60s and 70s.
Dodge Charger R/T
Built by Dodge, the Charger first a show car back in 1964. Since then, the Charger has become an iconic muscle car that spans seven generations of production.
Chevrolet Chevelle SS
Spanning 3 generations of GM production, the Chevelle first came about in 1964. Manufactured as a coupe, sedan, convertible and station wagon, the Chevelle is one the most legendary cars of its era.
Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet
Initially built as a performance-orientated option, the 1969 Mach 1 has become a legend in its own right. Introduced in 1964, the Mach 1 Mustang is still in production today.
Built between 1964 and 1974 the Pontiac GTO is an American muscle car that has become an icon for the custom car world.
Built with a V8 engine, the Shelby Cobra has been around since the early 60s. as one of the most revolutionary cars in history, this 2-door roadster is definitely an icon of its era.
Entering production I 1968, the Plymouth Road Runner is a mid-sized car with a familiar focus on performance. As the generation of muscle cars became more expensive, the Road Runner was built to bring muscle cars back to their roots.
Perhaps one of the most recognizable muscle cars of all time, alongside the Mustang, the Camaro has been turning heads since its inception in 1967. Six generations later and the Camaro is still going strong.
Plymouth Barracuda Convertible
Produced in the early 70s, the Barracuda Convertible was one of two models in the final third generation of the car. Despite its short lifespan, this pony car is definitely still one of the long lost favorites.
De Tomaso Pantera
The Pantera was De Tomaso’s most popular sport car with 7,260 cars being produced during its 20 year lifespan. Originated from Italy, the Pantera is perhaps the Grandfather of the more modern Lamborghini.

Built as a high performance version of the standard Mustang, the Shelby Mustang has made a name for itself as one of the most legendary cars for its era. During the fifth generation of the Mustang, the Shelby nameplate was introduced.
