Last week saw a list of the 10 rarest American muscle cars around – or not around, should I say. Sticking with the theme of muscle cars – I mean, who doesn’t love a classic American muscle? – we’re going to look at the most expensive. I won’t be surprised if there are some crossovers, but I think it will be fun anyway.
1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 427 LS6
Riding a 112 inch wheel base, the Chevelle SS 427 LS6 sold at 2013 Mecum Auctions in 2013 for $1.15 million.
1967 Shelby Super Snake GT500e
Known as the most expensive Mustang, this car sold for a whopping $1.3 million at Mecum Auctions. And if that wasn’t enough, there are only 50 of them to start with.
1970 Plymouth Hemi Barracuda Convertible
Stepping the game up a little, next on the list is the $2 million Plymouth Hemi Barracuda Convertible that sold at the Russo and Steele auction in 2011.
1971 Plymouth Hemi Barracuda Convertible
The next spot on this list is a similar model, but was produced a year later. This 1971 Barracuda sold for $2.2 million in 2017 at Barrett Jackson Auctions. As 1 of 11 convertibles produced in 1971, it’s a highly collectible car.
1971 Hemi Cuda Convertible
Believe it or not, this 4-speed Hemi Cuda Convertible sold for $3.5 million at Mecum Auto Auctions in 2014.
1976 Chevy Corvette L88
Upping the stakes a little is this ’76 Chevy Corvette which sold at Barrett Jackson Auctions for $3.85 million in January 2014.
1966 Shelby Cobra 427 ‘Super Snake’
Sold at Barrett Jackson Auctions for $5.5 million, there were only 23 of these cars built with only 2 made by Cobra in the ‘Super Snake’ shape.
1964 Ford GT40 Prototype
Now we’re heading into some serious money. In April 2014, the Ford GT40 Prototype sold for $7 million at Mecum Auctions.
Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe CSX 2601
In 2009, this Daytona Cobra Coupe sold for $7.25 million at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
1968 Ford GT40
At the very top of the list is the 1968 Ford GT40 sold at RM auctions for $11 million – that’s a lot of car.
What an impressive list! If only we could all afford these amazing cars, eh? Which was your favorite? I personally loved them all, but if I had to choose, it would be one of the Cudas.
