Have you ever thought about what it would be like to drive an 11,000bhp dragster?
In 1966, the Santapod Raceway in Bedfordshire, England, opened for the first time and began it’s career. Since then it’s become the centre hub for drag racing in Europe.
This awesome video from Car Throttle gives us exclusive footage of the raceway and an inside view on what it’s like to drive an 11,000bhp dragster.
The rush of adrenaline and emotion when you start is indescribable. It’s the feeling of knowing that you’re on your own now but you don’t want to let the crew down.
When the car goes, it’s like being hit by a truck. There’s 3.4/3.2 Gs hitting you all at once.
Drag racing is a complete escapism. You’ve put so much time and work into the car that there’s just no feeling like it.
When you get to that start line, you’re so full of adrenaline but you’re so focused. Everything else disappears, all you can see are the three bulbs at the starting line.
You’re at the start line, you’re strapped in, you’ve got your crash helmet on and everything else just goes, you become so focused on what’s next.
It’s a great feeling. You feel physically relaxed and you feel good because you know there’s nothing else you can do.
When you get down the track, you wonder, how did I survive this?
I love some of these inside thoughts and gives a whole new perspective to drag racing. It’s not just about which car will win but the driver behind the wheel.
