We all love that scent of a new car. This is because it brings back those memories of how it felt driving your new car for the first time. Unfortunately, this smell can fade with time. What’s more, dirt, mold, and dust can collect in your car and cause that pleasant smell to disappear sooner than expected. How can you bring back that new car smell to your old car?
If you want your car to look and smell good always, then you have to take proper care of it. Regular cleaning and servicing will go a long way in keeping the car in good shape. There are numerous benefits of car detailing. In addition to improving its appearance, cleaning can increase the value of your car too. You also feel proud and comfy riding in a clean car. Use the following tips to make your car appear and smell like you have just rolled it off the lot.
The car interiors
Begin by collecting any litter inside the car and throwing it into the garbage. Then, you may consider removing the mats out for cleaning. A lot of dust and debris can come off completely if you beat these gently with a broom or a tough stick. Vacuum the carpet and car seats using an attachment of your cleaner designed for use on vehicles. These attachments are small than regular ones and can reach spaces such as the inner surfaces of the air vents, between seats and center console.
It may be helpful to use a carpet and upholstery cleaner on the seats and the carpet. Just spray on the carpet or directly to those ugly marks and brush or wipe with a clean rag. This can help in getting rid of stubborn marks and foul smell. Another option is to sprinkle baking powder on the carpet and seats before vacuuming. It works well to loosen dirt and do away with musty smells. You could also remove drink spills from cup holders using a multipurpose cleaner.
Consider using a portable air compressor to purge dirt from the areas that are difficult to reach. Small crevices and corners can harbor dust particles and debris. It also helps to keep a collection of small brushes or cotton swabs that you can use to swab dirt off tiny areas such as those around dashboard controls, air vents and so forth. If you want your car to smell like it is new, you will need to take care of the ductwork so that the air flowing from the conditioning system is clean.
There are many pollutants in the air that can harm the exterior surfaces of your car if not protected properly. The good news is that you can remove most of these with plain cleaning and save your car’s finish. For an excellent job, consider using a clay bar and lubricant to get rid of contaminants such as brake dust, tree sap, bugs, tar and acid rain. This should leave the surface clean and smooth, ready for application of a sealant or wax where necessary.
The clay bar can be used on the glass as well. After using the clay bar and lubricant, wipe the glass with a microfiber cloth dipped in a liquid glass cleaner (ammonia-free). Make sure to work away from the sun so that your liquid cleaner does not dry fast leaving streaks. Lower the glass windows a little so that you can wipe the upper edge. Do not forget about the wiper blades as cleaning them with the glass cleaner can improve their efficiency.
Finish up with the exteriors by tackling the headlight covers. They tend to collect dirt, get clouded and oxidized with time. If you do not clean them, they not only ruin the appearance of your newly detailed car but also put you in a risky situation as the dirt abhors the amount of light coming from these headlights. Arm yourself with a headlight restoration kit and restore the gleam of this important component of your vehicle.
Tires and wheels
Cleaning the tires and wheels of your car will protect and keep them looking good for long. Dust is one great enemy of the chrome wheels. Always wash the wheels with a non-acidic cleaner. It is alright to brush with a soft brush taking keen attention to the lug nuts and wheel wells. You can spray the wheels and tires strongly with a stream of water to get rid of the loose dirt.
Once satisfied with the cleaning, lock the windows and allow the car to sit under the sun for about 24 hours. The cleaning and warmth should restore your car’s smell to its pleasant new car scent.
