So today I’ve dug out a very special video from the overwhelming amount of footage on YouTube to share a very unique car. The 2014 Black Pearl is owned by James Hetfield, the front man for Metallica, who is an avid custom car collector and designer.
Rick Dore from Rick Dore Customs has worked with Hetfield on a number of projects and this project is like no other.
How the 2014 Black Pearl was made
Starting with a 1948 Jaguar Saloon, this car was built from one of Hetfield’s very own drawings. But upon realizing that the Jaguar wasn’t going to fit the designs, they kept sketching and eventually started from scratch. Looking through some interviews, it’s clear that the Jag was going to take too much work and Dore was questioning whether the Jag would work at all.
Using the chassis made by No Limit Engineering (the one that was originally going to go in the Jag) and leveraging his contact with Marcel and Luc De Ley, a whole new custom car began to take shape.
How the designs changed
With Marcel and Luc on the body work, initial designs began to emerge that bore some resemblance to the 1948 Jag – mainly the grille. The fastback roofline was a must for this design and the original concept that carried the design procedure.
As the body began to take shape, Dore found that the designs were beginning to evolve too and were becoming drastically different to the preliminary designs.
The main components
The car took over two years to complete and contains a number of different components, including: Mustang steering, AccuAir air-ride suspension, an automatic transmission, 15-inch Coker American Classic tires and a 302 cubic inch Ford small block engine.
The interior of the car was taken care of by Ron Mangus from Ron Mangus Interiors who built the seats himself and covered them in a gorgeous cream leather. The classic-style gauges were installed into the dash and the steering column came from a 1941 Lincoln.
As you can imagine, this car has been pretty popular and won 2014 Custom of the Year at the Goodguys show in Pleasanton.
